Quality Dialogues 2024: “Studyability, dropping out, academic success”

The fifth edition of the “Quality Dialogue” took place on 26 June 2024.

With this year’s Quality Dialogues, the Accreditation Council focused on studyability, dropout and academic success as multifactorial constructs and, together with around 380 participants, looked at these interdependent aspects from different perspectives in order to shed light on the diverse implications of studyability, dropout and academic success.

The presentations of the keynote speeches “Studiability, dropout and academic success – results and blind spots of higher education research” by Prof. Dr. Philipp Pohlenz, “Studiability and academic success from a student perspective” by Luft Kettenbeil and “What characterizes successful studies? The perspective of the economy.” by Julia Flasdick are available, as are the presentations of the panels “Challenges in transitions of the student life cycle” (Panel 3), “Promoting skills and managing expectations in all phases of study” (Panel 4) and “Different subjects and forms of study – different forms of evaluation” (Panel 6).

Participants were able to collect topics and questions before the Quality Dialogues, and you can view this digital pinboard (mural) here.

The graphic recording, i.e. a visual accompaniment to the event, is available for download here; the presentations of the keynote speeches and the panel inputs will follow.

The criterion of ‘studyability’ in all its dimensions is a decisive factor for successful study, which is why it also represents a central aspect of the quality assurance and further development of study programmes and thus of accreditation procedures.

At first glance, these are only ‘purely formal’ aspects such as standard period of study, freedom from course overlaps, workload, examination density and organization, module structure and monitoring measures; in fact, the question of studyability resonates when considering almost all other criteria relevant to accreditation procedures.

With this year’s Quality Dialogues, the Accreditation Council invites you to focus on studyability, dropout and academic success as multifactorial constructs and to look at these interdependent aspects from different perspectives together with students, university management, teaching staff, Quality Management staff and Agencies, as well as employer representatives and university researchers, in order to shed light on the diverse implications of studyability, dropout and academic success.

The Quality Dialogue has been held annually since 2019, on the day before a meeting of the Accreditation Council (most recently: the June meeting). It provides a forum for all topics related to the quality of studies and teaching and is open to all stakeholders involved.

    Topics have included:

    – Feasibility of studies, dropout rates, and academic success (2024)

    – Diversity at universities (2023)

    – Teacher training (2022)

    – Dual study programs from an accreditation perspective (2021)

    – Academic continuing education and lifelong learning (2019)

There was no Quality Dialogue in 2025.
