Prof. Dr. Eng. Jutta Abulawi (1964) has been Professor of Systems Engineering and CAD at the Faculty of Aviation and Vehicle Systems at HAW Hamburg since 2013. She studied mechanical engineering at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and Cambridge University, has twelve years of professional experience in aircraft and special machine construction and a doctorate from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg. Her specialist research focuses on design methods and methods of model-based system development. Cooperation partners for her third-party funded projects are both industrial companies and external research institutions such as the DLR, and she regularly takes part in the International Workshop of the International Council on Systems Engineering for international exchange. She is a long-standing member of the VDI and the Society for Systems Engineering.
From 2014 to 2017, Abulawi was Vice Dean for Teaching at the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at HAW Hamburg and responsible for quality management in teaching at this faculty. In this role, she actively supported the introduction of system accreditation at HAW Hamburg from the kick-off in 2014 to the first on-site inspection in 2017. Through her membership in the study reform committee of the Department of Automotive Engineering and Aircraft Construction, she is currently practically involved in the university’s internal procedures for the accreditation of study programs based on the HAW model.
Abulawi’s teaching in the Automotive Engineering and Aircraft Engineering degree programs is predominantly project-oriented with the involvement of professional practitioners and experts from industry in order to achieve a high level of application and promote sustainable learning in various areas of competence. At HAW, she also works as a multiplier for competence-oriented teaching and testing and as a teaching-learning coach and is an active member of the Verein LehreN Netzwerk e.V.
Since 2015, she has been responsible for HAW Hamburg’s strategic university partnership with Virginia Tech, which is funded by the DAAD as an International Study and Training Partnership from 2018 – 2026. She is an active member of the Teacher Hub of CARPE, a European association of universities of applied sciences. From 2024 to the end of 2027, she is also an elected member of the Executive Committee of the international university network Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3).
